Joanne is an internationally trained health and wellbeing practitioner.  For the past seven years she has been supporting people to find the motivation and develop the tools to optimise their emotional and physical health and wellbeing.  Her passion for enabling people to experience optimal health and realise their full potential has lead her to train and qualify in various physical and emotional health modalities.  She is a qualified Professional Health & Wellness Coach, Personal Trainer, and a licensed Mindful Eating Coach and workshop Facilitator, and is currently training to become an Essentrics movement instructor.  At the heart of her work is a desire to support people to make the changes in their outlooks and behaviours that will help them live with more self-awareness, self-compassion and self-care – so that they can truly live their lives to the full.

At In the Moment, Joanne is offering workshops for the innovative and powerful Am I Hungry?® Mindful Eating Programme.  These engaging live sessions are a combination of interactive discussions and thought-provoking activities delivered in conjunction with print materials and online support tools.  These programmes run throughout the year.  Joanne is the only practitioner in Scotland qualified to lead this programme and one of a small handful across the UK.

Mindful eating is eating with intention and attention:

Eating with the intention of caring for yourself.  Eating with the attention necessary for noticing and enjoying your food and its effects on your body.

Mindful eating is much more than “eating slowly, without distraction.”  It encompasses the entire process of eating:

  • Awareness of your physical and emotional cues
  • Recognition of your non-hunger triggers for eating
  • Learning to meet your other needs in more effective ways than eating
  • Choosing food for both enjoyment and nourishment
  • Eating for optimal satisfaction and satiety
  • Using the fuel you’ve consumed to live the vibrant life you crave

Many people who struggle with food react mindlessly to their unrecognised or unexamined triggers, thoughts, and feelings.  In other words, they re-act – repeating past actions again and again – feeling powerless to change.  Mindfulness increases your awareness of these patterns without judgment and creates space between your triggers and your actions.  For example, whenever you notice that you feel like eating and pause to ask the question “Am I hungry?”, you are able to observe your thoughts and choose how you will respond.  Instead of reacting mindlessly, mindfulness gives you response-ability.  That is how mindful eating empowers you to finally break old automatic or habitual chain reactions and discover options that work better for you.  This broad application makes mindful eating a powerful tool for developing a healthier, happier relationship with food.  For more information on the workshops visit Joanne’s website.

In early January 2019 Joanne intends to offer classes in the Essentrics movement technique.  Essentrics is a dynamic strength and stretch low impact workout, perfect for men and women of all fitness levels, that tones, shapes and rebalances the entire body.  With a diverse music playlist accompanying each routine, this equipment-free intelligent workout leaves you feeling energised, youthful and healthy.  Watch this space for more information.

Joanne has recently moved back to the UK after 16 years living overseas.  Before becoming a Coach she was a social anthropologist.  She enjoys hiking in the outdoors, fitness and mind-body exercise such as yoga and martial arts, as well as anything to do with neuroscience, lifestyle medicine, coaching and positive psychology.
