To keep yoga a living tradition, it needs to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of our modern life.  Join Brea Johnson of Heart & Bones Yoga for a weekend of exploration as we blend movement science, yoga and alignment into a succinct, sustainable and empowered practice.  You will discover the 4 pillars of a sustainable yoga practice, what they are and how to apply them to any style of yoga or movement practice.  Gain a better understanding of human movement, learn to observe bodies and how to design a yoga practice that supports the health of your joints, prevent wear and tear and keep you and your students practicing in healthy way for years to come.

With a focus on hips and shoulders and the nervous system, we will dive into the nooks and crannies as we explore mobility, functional movement and how to update some of the most popular yoga asanas to ones that are supportive and healthy for the long term.  Perfect for yogis and yoga teachers looking to expand and update their practice and teaching.

Johnson Pic 3Outline:
Hips & Psoas:  When your hips and psoas muscles are feeling great, your knees, feet and back will feel the love as well.  Your hip joints help you to walk, run and play.  Yet for many of us, because of a lifestyle that includes long periods of sitting and exercise activities that generally only move us in one or two planes of motion, the hips are chronically tight.  And even in a regular yoga practice, we can bypass true hip mobility which leaves the lower back and SI joints vulnerable.  We will explore the anatomy and biomechanics of the hips to build stability and uncover functional mobility in your hip joints.  Working with various postures and movements we will unglue tight hips, assess what is causing your current limitations and intelligently reawaken those forgotten and neglected areas.  Discover the what your psoas muscles are and how they play an important role in your hip health and sustainability of your whole body.

Strong & Supple Shoulders:  Does the thought of swinging on monkey bars or doing Chaturanga make your shoulders cringe?  Do you hear clicking in your shoulders when they move?  Lifestyle factors such as hunching over keyboards, driving in cars, along with stress can decrease your range of motion and can add to shoulder instability.  Tight shoulders will restrict breathing and compromise posture.  Using a variety of techniques and specific postures, we will unwind tension from the neck, shoulders, down the arms to the wrists and hands.  You will discover ways to stabilize your shoulder girdle so that you can find more sustainable strength and mobility in your chaturangas and downward dogs.  Walk away with shoulders and arms that can hug, swing, move effortlessly and pain-free in yoga and in everyday life.
